Balconies
A balcony ceiling that shrugs off sun and rain
The balcony is the one room that gets rained on. Its ceiling has to take sun, humidity and rain without warping, cracking or fading, which is why PVC panels suit it better than timber or paint.

The balcony needs a different ceiling from the rest of the home
Indoors, a painted ceiling is fine. On the balcony the ceiling takes direct sun, humidity and rain, and a painted or timber ceiling shows it over time: peeling, swelling, dark patches where damp has sat.
PVC panels are designed for these conditions. They do not warp, crack or fade in sunlight, humidity and rain, so the ceiling keeps its appearance over time. That is the main reason for choosing them on a balcony.
What the panel is
PVC is polyvinyl chloride, made into lightweight, durable, weather-resistant ceiling panels that cover the underside of the balcony slab. They come in a range of colours, textures and wood-finish designs, and give a clean look with very little upkeep.
Two properties matter most on a balcony. The panel resists moisture, so humidity and rain do not damage it. And it resists termites, which makes it a reliable choice where the weather is humid or the rain frequent.
Wood-grain, white gloss or grooved
The design options:
- Wood-finish panels: the warm look of a timber ceiling without the upkeep. The soffits in the photos on this page are brown wood-finish grooved panels, with the grooves running in one direction.
- White gloss panels: a clean, bright ceiling.
- Decorative groove patterns: grooves that give the ceiling texture.
- Linear designs: narrow slats in long, straight runs.
- Combination layouts with LED lighting: panels and lights planned together as one ceiling.
- Custom colours: chosen to match the exterior of the home.
Matte finishes and other decorative patterns are also available.
Lighting is planned with the ceiling
A balcony is used in the evening as much as during the day. LED strip lights or spotlights set into a PVC ceiling give the balcony a warm light after dark. The soffits in the photos carry small recessed spotlights spaced along the panels. Decide where the lights go before the panels are fixed, so the wiring sits behind them.
Installation is quick because the panels are light
The panels are lightweight and easy to install, so a balcony ceiling generally goes up faster than conventional ceiling materials. That reduces labour cost and the time the job takes.
The material is also cost-effective. You get the look of a wood or decorative ceiling without the cost of natural wood or other decorative materials, and the panel lasts outdoors.
Cleaning is a damp cloth
Unlike a wooden or painted ceiling, a PVC ceiling needs very little upkeep. A wipe with a damp cloth is usually enough to keep it clean. There is nothing to repaint and nothing to polish.
That combination of durability, water resistance and low upkeep is why PVC is one of the most common ceiling choices for balconies in apartments, villas and commercial buildings.

Questions people ask us
Will the ceiling warp or fade in the monsoon?
No. PVC panels are designed to withstand sunlight, humidity and rain without warping, cracking or fading, which is why they suit a balcony better than timber or a painted ceiling.
Can termites get into it?
PVC resists both moisture and termites, which is one of its biggest advantages on a balcony, especially through humid weather and frequent rain.
How do I clean it?
Wipe it with a damp cloth. There is no repainting or polishing to do.
Can I have lights in the ceiling?
Yes. LED strip lights or spotlights can be added to the ceiling for a warm light in the evening. The soffits in the photos on this page carry small recessed spotlights.
Is it quicker to put up than a normal ceiling?
Yes. The panels are light and go up faster than conventional ceiling materials, which keeps the labour and the time on site down.
